Rethinking networks in space with Aalyria’s Brian Barritt

FROM THE CONVERSATION

Mike Gruss: What does success look like on a government contract?

Brian Barritt: NASA's transitioning from a world where they owned their own space relays and they owned their own dedicated ground stations that were exclusively allocated to them. And with the commercial services program or CSP, they're moving to a model where they're transitioning away from that so that the 30+ NASA Earth observation missions ... will make use of commercial services for both space relay and for commercial ground stations. So when NASA has spacecraft flying, their space-time deployment can tell their NASA spacecraft to point an optical terminal or a software-defined Ka-band payload at another spacecraft or ground station. But they also need to ask that that commercial satellite to point a beam back at the right NASA satellite. And that's not NASA's controllers or network operations systems job. That's commercial companies.
