Rocket Lab’s fast track from small-launch specialist to defense prime
A recent streak of Pentagon contracts shows Rocket Lab is moving beyond small launch to become an end-to-end provider of spacecraft, sensors, launch and mission operations.
The company is producing satellites for missile warning and communications networks, developing spacecraft to track aircraft from orbit, performing rapid-response missions, providing suborbital flights for hypersonic and missile defense testing and working with Raytheon on concepts for space-based interceptors. Its proposed $8 billion acquisition of Iridium Communications would add a global satellite network and radio spectrum for commercial and military use.
Missile defense has emerged as a common thread connecting much of Rocket Lab’s Pentagon business.
The Electron-derived HASTE rocket gives the military a way to place experimental vehicles and targets onto suborbital trajectories. The Pentagon is seeking more frequent flight opportunities because hypersonic technologies are difficult to validate in wind tunnels and computer models, while conventional missile tests can be costly and slow to arrange.
Rocket Lab has a 20-flight order for HASTE missions under the Pentagon’s MACH-TB 2.0 testing program. In May, Anduril placed a separate $30 million order for three HASTE launches from Virginia, financed with the defense company’s own money rather than a government contract.
In July, the Space Force disclosed an even larger $266 million contract for 12 suborbital launches, with options for six more. Most are to take place from a new Rocket Lab operating location within the existing Pacific Spaceport Complex on Kodiak Island, Alaska. The award broadens Rocket Lab’s defense launch footprint beyond Virginia and New Zealand and gives the military access to Alaska’s long over-water flight corridors.
The company on Monday unveiled GHOST, or Global Hypersonic & Orbital Spaceport Technology, a containerized system that packages the ground equipment and range-control infrastructure needed to launch either Electron or HASTE. Its first deployment will be at the Pacific Spaceport Complex in Alaska.
Rocket Lab is also moving into the missile defense architecture. The Space Development Agency selected it to build 18 missile-warning and tracking satellites for the agency’s Tracking Layer Tranche 3.
The company has also joined Raytheon in the Space Force’s space-based interceptor effort, part of the Golden Dome missile defense initiative.
For the Space Force Victus Haze responsive space exercise conducted in June, Rocket Lab built a maneuverable Pioneer satellite, held an Electron rocket and spacecraft ready for an alert, launched 16 hours and 42 minutes after receiving the Space Force’s notice and then operated the satellite as it approached and photographed another object in orbit. The spacecraft was commissioned within 38 hours, and the rendezvous and proximity operations were completed in less than 59 hours, ahead of the military’s deadlines.
In May, the Space Force awarded Rocket Lab $90 million to build and operate two geostationary satellites carrying Heimdall optical sensors for tracking objects around the GEO belt. It is Rocket Lab’s first satellite-production program for geostationary orbit. The sensor began as a GEOST project before Rocket Lab acquired the company in 2025.
Rocket Lab is taking the “end to end” model on a larger scale with the Space Force’s Space-Based Airborne Moving Target Indicator program. An award announced last week has a potential value of $397 million and explicitly calls for the satellites to launch on Neutron, the company’s next-generation reusable rocket intended to move the company from the small-launch market into the medium-lift class occupied by SpaceX’s Falcon 9.
