In a speech at the Satellite 2025 conference March 12, Jay Schwartz, chief of the FCC's Space Bureau, said he will approach the regulation of satellite communications systems through an economic lens with a goal of ensuring the industry's growth.
"The way I see it is that the main job of the Space Bureau at the FCC is to facilitate and accelerate all the investments in your industry," he said. "If we at the FCC, whether through slow processing, overly burdensome rules, things like that, are creating unnecessary regulatory drag, that drag matters in meaningful ways." RBC Signals adds 10 antennas to global ground-station network By Debra Werner RBC Signals is expanding its global network of ground stations by acquiring 10 six-meter S-band and X-band satellite-tracking antennas from Microsoft. With the new antennas, RBC Signals aims to satisfy rapidly growing demand from government and commercial customers who often rely on S-band and X-band to communicate with small satellites in low Earth orbit. Cognitive Space claims two SDA awards By Sandra Erwin On March 5, Houston startup Cognitive Space, which is focused on applying artificial intelligence to satellite operations, announced a $5 million direct to phase 2 Small Business Innovation Research contract to enhance automated sensor management for missile-tracking satellites. Cognitive Space will apply artificial-intelligence algorithms to help the Space Development Agency quickly identify sensors in the best position to hone in on missiles that pose a threat. Read More
