In 2023, the geostationary Earth orbit (GEO) market accounted for around 85% of the $12 billion in total satellite capacity revenue, but the rapid rise of NGSO systems is shifting the landscape. The NGSO market, driven by players like Starlink and Amazon's Project Kuiper, is set to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 27%, reaching $18 billion by 2033. By then, NGSOs will account for more than two-thirds of total satellite capacity revenue, projected to hit $25 billion. This surge is driven by the growing demand for high-speed, low-latency broadband for industries such as aviation, enterprise, and government.
The influx of NGSO satellites is also expected to drive prices down, which could open up new markets and further challenge traditional GEO operators, many of whom are forming multi-orbit partnerships to stay competitive.
