Launch companies focus on scaling up flight rates of new vehicles

Companies that are fielding new launch vehicles are now facing the challenge of scaling up operations to meet the continued high demand for them.


During a panel discussion Sept. 16, executives with several launch companies that have or are about to introduce new launch vehicles say they are turning their attention to increasing their launch cadence.


Blue Origin, United Launch Alliance, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Arianespace all plan to aggressively push their launch cadence over the next year, though other bottlenecks such as production and commercial demand will factor in. Read More

Ex-Im Bank's space project pipeline doubles to $9.5 billion in one year

The pipeline of space-related projects seeking financial support from the U.S. export credit agency has more than doubled in the past year to $9.5 billion, a top official at the Export-Import Bank said Sept. 16. Ex-Im first vice president and vice chair Judith Pryor said the bank is "actively underwriting $800 million worth of space transactions as we speak." Read More


Planet signs three-year DLR contract

Under the agreement, DLR and German researchers will have access to PlanetScope products, including nearly daily imagery of Earth's landmass at approximately three-meter resolution. The contract also covers the PlanetScope archive, which includes data from 2016 on. The value of the three-year contract was not disclosed. Read More

France kicks off space surveillance program for LEO

The French Defense Innovation Agency and armament agency DGA unveiled a low-Earth orbit space surveillance program. French startup U-space will work with multinational missile supplier MBDA to develop a pair of satellites to demonstrate spacecraft detection, characterization and targeting. The program, known as Toutatis, includes a 12-unit "Spotter" cubesat and a smaller target cubesat. Read More

Space Force awards $45 million to universities for propulsion and power research

The Rochester Institute of Technology and the University of Michigan will lead the third Space Strategic Technology Institute, part of the Space Force's University Consortium initiative. The program, which is also supported by the Air Force Research Laboratory, aims to foster academic research aligned with the strategic needs of the Space Force. Read More


U.S. military invests $12.5 million in Ursa Major for solid rocket development

The funding, a joint investment from the U.S. Navy and the Pentagon's Office of Strategic Capital (OSC), will be matched by Ursa Major, bringing the total investment to $25 million. U.S. military satellites built by York Space demonstrate optical communications in orbit
