Speaking at the World Space Business Week conference here Sept. 16, ESA Director General Josef Aschbacher noted that the huge existing gap in spending between Europe and the United States in space is complicated further by spending in Europe that is spread among a wider range of agencies.
Aschbacher said that European governments overall spent 11.4 billion euros ($12.7 billion) on space in 2023, compared to 64 billion euros by U.S. government agencies such as NASA and the Space Force. "There's a factor of six between the European and the American investment on the public side in space. A factor of six is a lot," he said. "To catch up is enormous." Eutelsat signs multi-launch agreement for MHI's H3 rocket
By Jason Rainbow Eutelsat said Sept. 18 it has signed a contract to use multiple H3 rockets from 2027 in the French fleet operator's first launch agreement with Japan's Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. Few specifics have been disclosed but Arlen Kassighian, Eutelsat's chief engineering officer, said the agreement will help diversify its launch opportunities. Chance Saltzman, gave a ringing endorsement to the "tactical surveillance, reconnaissance, and tracking" (TacSRT) program, which leverages commercial satellite imagery and data analytics to support military operations, citing success during the U.S. troop withdrawal from Niger. The TacSRT program began as a pilot in February to support U.S. Africa Command. Read More
Space Force chief urges readiness for new era of competition By Sandra Erwin Saltzman also issued a call to action for service members to prepare for an increasingly complex security environment shaped by great power rivalry, with a particular focus on China and Russia.
