🚀 AWS launches Generative AI for Space team


Amazon Web Services (AWS) has formed a Generative AI for Space team dedicated to applying AI technologies to the space industry. Clint Crosier, director of aerospace and satellite solutions at AWS, shared the news at World Satellite Business Week on Sept. 18.


🛰️ Focus areas include:

  • On-orbit command and control

  • Space operations

  • Human spaceflight

"We see so much value in generative AI that I set aside a specific part of our global team," Crosier said. "This new team is identifying use cases where Gen AI can solve problems specific to the space industry—whether it's on-orbit command and control, space operations, or human spaceflight."


Crosier, a retired Air Force major general who led the creation of the U.S. Space Force, said AWS's Generative AI for Space team is working with aerospace and geospatial customers to identify how AI can solve industry-specific challenges.


🔧 Why it matters: AWS is targeting complex space operations where Gen AI could streamline processes and improve decision-making. This initiative could impact both commercial and government space projects by tailoring AI solutions to address unique operational needs in space.


"We've come up with a few interesting use cases that we will be rolling out and publicizing very soon," Crosier said.

🛡️ Anduril's AI Satellites Planned for 2025


What's new: Anduril Industries, known for its AI-driven drones and defense technology, is expanding into space. The California-based company plans to build an unspecified number of fully autonomous, AI-powered spacecraft in-house, targeting a 2025 launch. These satellites will focus on space domain awareness (monitoring space activities) and satellite defense. A launch provider has yet to be announced.

🛰️ NGA Banks on AI for $290M Satellite Data Contracts


The National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) is committing $290 million over the next five years to enhance AI-powered satellite data analytics through its Luno A initiative.


💎 10 IDIQs Awarded: On Sept. 13, the NGA awarded Indefinite Delivery Indefinite Quantity (IDIQ) contracts to 10 companies, allowing them to compete for task orders totaling up to $290 million. These companies include:

  • Airbus U.S. Space & Defense

  • Booz Allen Hamilton

  • BlackSky

  • BlueHalo

  • CACI

  • Electromagnetic Systems Inc.

  • Maxar Intelligence

  • NV5 Geospatial

  • Royce Geospatial Consultants

  • Ursa Space Systems

🤖AI Role: NGA is looking for AI solutions that will focus on:

  • Computer Vision for satellite imagery analysis (object detection, pattern recognition).

  • Real-time Data Processing to enable faster decision-making and timely responses to global events.

  • Data Integration across economic, environmental, and military sectors for a comprehensive view of global activities.

  • Predictive Analytics to forecast trends based on historical data, especially for economic and environmental monitoring.


🦾 Space Force Seeks AI to Automate Satellite Networks


What's new: The U.S. Space Force issued a request for information (RFI) on Sept. 6, seeking AI solutions to automate its hybrid satellite communications network, which integrates both military and commercial assets. The RFI asks for industry responses by Oct. 6. While no specific funding has been announced, the RFI lays the groundwork for future acquisitions.


🤖 AI Role: AI will be used for network orchestration, automating the allocation of satellite resources in real time. By processing data such as demand, satellite health, and availability, AI will manage network performance and make adjustments autonomously, ensuring optimal operation without requiring constant human oversight.


🎯 Goal: The Space Force aims to build a more resilient, efficient satellite network with enhanced real-time responsiveness. By integrating AI, the network will be able to quickly adapt to changing conditions and reduce the complexity and costs associated with managing multiple satellite systems.
